Library 3D Printing Guide: Overview

Guide to 3D printers in the JPL Library

3D Printers

The JPL Library provides two 3D printers for use by JPL employees. These printers can be used free of charge and available for use on a first come, first served basis. Click below to learn more about each, or stop by the Hub (111-104) to check out the printers:

3D Printing Community Guidelines

  • Prints should be research or education related
  • Be considerate of others, please notify library staff if your print will take over 8 hours
  • Please leave your name and contact information on the whiteboard provided in case your build fails mid-print

3D Printing Safety

  • Please do not bring flammable materials near the 3D printers.
  • Avoid touching the hot ends when heated.  These includes the heat break, heat sink, heater block and nozzles.  Touching these parts without proper protection can cause burns to the skin.
  • Do not use the 3D printers to create objects intended for food or drink applications, chemical storage, or objects subjected to heat or liquid fuels
  • Avoid opening the 3D printer doors when printing
  • Please do not load outside/personal filament without consulting the library staff.  The printers are not connected to external ventilation systems and certain types of filaments can produce toxic fumes.  All 3D printing produces some amount of fumes but filaments such as PLA, ECO-ABS, and PETG are considered safe when used in a well-ventilated room without dedicated ventilation systems.
