March is Women's Herstory Month, check out ebooks and print books about women's challenges and accomplishment in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM).   Here is a more extensive list, but here are a few featured ebooks:

  • Women Spacefarers: Sixty Different Paths to Space

This book tells the fascinating stories of the valiant women who broke down barriers to join the space program. Beginning with the orbital flight of USSR cosmonaut Valentina Tereshkova in 1963, they became players in the greatest adventure of our time. The author contextualizes their accomplishments in light of the political and cultural climate, from the Cold War in the background to the changing status of women in society at large, during the Seventies.

The book includes the biographies of, and in some cases interviews with, the sixty women who flew in space in the first half century of space history. It reports their achievements and some little known details. The result is a gallery of pioneering women who reached for the stars: women who, with exceptional skill, hard work, and dedication, reached impressive careers as accomplished pilots, researchers, and engineers; many are now in high level managerial positions both at NASA or in public and private organizations, and all left a legacy of strength.

  • Women in Aerospace Materials: Advancements and Perspectives of Emerging Technologies

This book provides insight into research and development of key aerospace materials that have enabled some of the most exciting air and space technologies in recent years. The stories are shared with you by the women who experienced them, those engineers and scientists in the labs, on the shop floors, or on the design teams contributing to the realization of these technologies.Their work contributes to the world in the challenging and vital field of aerospace materials, and their stories seethe with a pride and a passion for the opportunity to make these important contributions.

  • Women in Industrial and Systems Engineering: Key Advances and Perspectives on Emerging Topics

This book presents a diversity of innovative and impactful research in the field of industrial and systems engineering (ISE) led by women investigators.  After a Foreword by Margaret L. Brandeau, an eminent woman scholar in the field, the book is divided into the following sections:  Analytics, Education, Health, Logistics, and Production.  Also included is a comprehensive biography on the historic luminary of industrial engineering, Lillian Moeller Gilbreth.  Each chapter presents an opportunity to learn about the impact of the field of industrial and systems engineering and women’s important contributions to it. Topics range from big data analysis, to improving cancer treatment, to sustainability in product design, to teamwork in engineering education. A total of 24 topics touch on many of the challenges facing the world today and these solutions by women researchers are valuable for their technical innovation and excellence and their non-traditional perspective.  Found within each author’s biography are their motivations for entering the field and how they view their contributions, providing inspiration and guidance to those entering industrial engineering.
