Old Beacon Express: Using Beacon Express

Beacon Express brings the Library’s document delivery service to your computer desktop. We can supply copies of journal articles, conference papers, and documents, as well as fill all of your book requests.

Using BEACON Express

What is Beacon Express?

Beacon Express is an online request system which the JPL Library has implemented to automate document delivery and interlibrary loan processes. You can request journal articles and meeting papers, regardless whether JPL Library subscribe to the journal or not. You can also request to borrow books from other libraries, or with a project/task number, request to purchase books as your "desk copy."

Who can use Beacon Express?

JPL employees, interns, on-site contractors, and affiliates. Beacon Express uses Singe Sign-On (SSO) for authentication so there is no need to register.

How to Request Items

Articles/Papers

Use to request copies of referenced journal articles, book chapters, or meeting papers.

  1. Click Create Request
  2. By default, the Article request form will open.
  3. Enter as much information about the item as possible. Required fields are marked with asterisks. Use the "Where did you learn about this item?" to provide additional information if needed.
  4. Click on Submit Request.

Borrow a Book

Use to borrow material from the JPL Library or from another library via interlibrary loan.

  1. Click Create Request
  2. Switch Request Type to Book Loan

  3. Enter as much information about the item as possible. Required fields are marked with asterisks. Use the "Where did you learn about this item?" to provide additional information if needed.

  4. Click on Submit Request

Purchase

The Library is the "control point" for JPLers and JPL organizations wanted to make book purchases, including eBooks, audio books, conference proceedings, CD-ROMs, digital media, etc.

These are typically called “desk copies” and will be labeled as government property.

  1. Click Create Request
  2. Switch Request Type to Purchase

  3. Enter as much information about the item as possible. Required fields are marked with asterisks. Use the "Where did you learn about this item?" to provide additional information if needed.
  4. Click on Submit Request
