The American Geophysical Union (AGU) just launched a new open access journal, adding it to the Journal of Geophysical Research (JGR) family, it is the JGR: Machine Learning and ComputationIt is dedicated to the publication of research that develops and explores innovative data-driven and computational methodologies based on statistical analysis, machine learning, artificial intelligence, and mathematical models, with the aim of advancing knowledge in the domain of Earth and space sciences. The journal will accept papers proposing novel results in all geosciences including the broad fields of (1) solar and space physics, (2) geophysical fluids and planetary environments, (3) Earth surface and interiors, (4) geochemistry and biogeosciences.

Topics that are within the scope of the journal include:

  • Foundational analyses supporting novel computational approaches involving Machine Learning, Artificial Intelligence, as well as statistical and numerical models exploiting emerging hardware technologies for observations and High Performance Computing
  • The implementation of new paradigms for the exploration/exploitation of data, intended in its broadest meaning: remote sensing and in-situ observations, simulation output of physics-based or empirical models, laboratory experiments
  • Knowledge discovery and interpretability of physics-based models, including discovery of underlying geophysical equations with data-driven approaches and advanced visualization approaches
  • Computational approaches leveraging fundamental physics and data science methods to improve the predictive capability of global and forecasting models
  • Geoscience case studies that result from or showcase use of original data science analyses, computational methods and numerical models

This is a brand new journal, and it is just begin to call for submissions.  To learn more, check the journal website and the blog post from AGU.
